Bosse (ボッス, Bossu) is a character in Ousama Ranking and its anime adaption. He was the first king of the Bosse Kingdom and the father of Bojji and Daida.

Bosse was the 7th ranked ranked king in the world, and widely acknowledged as the strongest man in the world.

Appearance[]

Bosse was a towering adult giant with black eyes, shaggy brown hair, a matching shaggy brown beard, and a very stern face. He was at least three times the height of most adult humans, and had prominent scars crisscrossing his very muscular body.

After his first death Bosse was forcibly reincarnated into the body of his second son, Daida.

Personality[]

Bosse is primarily shown in flashback, where he is depicted as a man of few words and overwhelming physical power. As a younger giant Bosse was both rougher and more expressive, and was openly obsessed with gaining strength. This seems to have been the primary motivation for his adventuring, and he traveled across the world to do so.

As an older man, and the strongest being on earth, he became a true stoic, betraying little emotion while harboring deep secrets from all around him.

Much of Bosse's later life is characterized by feelings of obligation borne out of guilt, both to his surrogate daughter Miranjo and his first son Bojji. Indeed, Bosse appears to have founded his entire kingdom and carefully assembled his senior advisors specifically to give Bojji as safe a life as possible, possibly in penance for what he had done to his son.

Plot[]

Adventurer Life & Meeting Miranjo[]

Bosse was originally an adventurer of unknown origin. Obsessed with becoming stronger, Bosse traveled far and wide to find new challenges for himself, eventually finding his way to the Houma Kingdom, a land full of mages whose power could rival the Gods. Bosse fought his first and seemingly only duel with Miranjo's father, narrowly killing him but sustaining grievous injuries himself. He was nursed back to health by Miranjo's mother, who bore him no grudge. Over time Bosse developed a deep affection for the young Miranjo, and became an ally to the Houma people in their battle against the Gods.

Destruction of the Houma Kingdom[]

Unfortunately the Houma kingdom would be betrayed by another ally, the Gyakuza Kingdom, and most of its people slaughtered in a surprise attack by the Gods. Miranjo and her mother survived, but the mother was quickly killed by opportunistic Gyakuza, who then tortured and mutilated Miranjo. Bosse discovered this after returning from the warfront, and in his grief he slaughtered an entire village of Gyakuza, taking their remains to a local physician so their bodies could be used to restore his young friend.

Deal with a Demon[]

After restoring Miranjo, Bosse resumed his wandering lifestyle, now with his young friend in tow. The two traveled far and wide, but eventually Bosse began to feel the limits of his natural strength. Wanting to assist her savior, Miranjo told Bosse of a demon who could enhance his power. The demon confirmed this, with the caveat that it could not create strength from nothing, but that it could steal strength from a relative. This lead to Bosse's fateful bargain with the demon, to steal his future son's power and add it to his own.

Founding the Bosse Kingdom[]

Shortly after his deal with the demon, Miranjo informed Bosse of a notorious giantess adventurer, Sheena. Though he initially courted Sheena to fulfill his bargain, it appears Bosse slowly came to love the giantess. Once Sheena gave birth to Bojji the bargain took effect, and Bosse gained the power of another giant, becoming the strongest being in the world. However, it was a bittersweet moment for Bosse, as he saw his newborn son he finally came to appreciate the implications of what he had done. In penitence, Bosse declared he would wander no longer, and founded the Bosse Kingdom on the site of Bojji's birth, so that he could defend and provide for his new family.

Several years after the kingdom's founding Miranjo, then a close advisor to Bosse, attempted to overthrow the kingdom with a mercenary army of Gigantes. Though the coup was unsuccessful, Sheena died defending Bojji from a hail of arrows, and Miranjo herself was killed in the crossfire after being betrayed by her army. It's unclear where Bosse was during this time, but this may have been when he briefly left the kingdom to slay the god Chabi-shin.

The aftermath of the attempted coup is not shown, and it's not known when Bosse returned to his kingdom, or if he had a hand in repelling the invading army.

First Death & Resurrection[]

After roughly a decade of rule Bosse became afflicted with a mysterious illness, one that slowly killed him over an extended period. He died in his bed, surrounded by his family and members of his court. Upon his death the demon appeared again, cackling at the gathered mourners before disappearing.

In the days after Bosse's death he was forcibly resurrected by Miranjo, who restored his soul to Daida's body. Afterward Bosse became an enigmatic presence at court, aware of Miranjo's plotting and running his own plots in turn, but never directly confronting her out of a strange sense of obligation.

Battles with Ouken & Bojji[]

After the monstrous Ouken slayed most of the Bosse Kingdom's warriors, Bosse finally stepped in, repeatedly crushing the immortal and encasing his regenerating body in a massive boulder, trapping a wailing Ouken in a stone prison.

Bosse then confronted his son Bojji, unwilling to stand aside or give up Daida's body. Though it was an epic clash, Bosse failed to inflict even one hit on his son, and indeed Bojji managed to destroy Bosse's signature club.

Final Death[]

Satisfied with his son's growth, Bosse stepped away from the fight and instead spoke to Miranjo, laying bare his true wishes for the two of them. At length, Miranjo agreed, and the two gave up their mortal forms, their souls drifting upward through the sky. Bosse's soul faded into the ether, finally and truly dead.

Relationships[]

Bojji[]

Though he very callously struck his deal with the Demon, Bosse felt immensely guilty for what he had stolen from his first son, Bojji. Bosse appears to have founded and carefully built the Bosse Kingdom as a clumsy attempt to make amends, ensuring his first son would be safe and protected even after his death. On his deathbed Bosse confessed that he had a deep affection for Bojji, suggesting it was because his son reminded him of the deceased Sheena.

Bojji lived his early life in awe of his father, and tried to emulate him in every way possible. This would only change when Bojji discovered his father had stolen Daida's body, at which point Bojji didn't hesitate to battle Bosse in order to restore his brother. It appears Bojji never learned of Bosse's deal with the Demon.

Miranjo[]

Bosse felt an immense sense of guilt for his effects on Miranjo's early life, and seems to feel responsible for the ultimate destruction of her family. After the death of her parents Bosse became Miranjo's surrogate-father, and spent much of his life attempting to heal her deep grief. In a way he succeeded, but was at a loss for what to do when Miranjo's jealously threatened to undo his kingdom and family.

Miranjo considers Bosse her oldest and best friend, though never quite acknowledges him as a father figure. She became extremely jealous as Bosse began to create a new family, and heartlessly conspired to destroy them in order to keep Bosse to herself.

Abilities[]

Supergiant Strength[]

Bosse was born a giant, and therefore already many times more powerful than the average human. After making a bargain with a devil he gained all the future strength and power of his first son, Bojji. As a result Bosse became exponentially more powerful than even other giants, and was the strongest single entity in the entire world.

His strength is so great that Bosse can even crush a large wooden club into a pure, uncut diamond.

Trivia[]

  • Bosse's name likely derives from the English word "boss" (ボス, Bosu).
