Daida (ダイダ, Daida) is a character in Ousama Ranking and its anime adaption. He is the second prince and second king of the Bosse Kingdom. He is the son of Bosse and Hiling, and the younger brother of Bojji.

Appearance[]

Daida is a tall boy with short blond hair and sharp blue eyes. He wears a purple doublet with white slashes down the front and a fur-trimmed neck, light purple hose, black shoes, and a small crown.

Personality[]

Groomed to rule since birth, Daida initially appeared to be a typical spoiled princeling, filled with jealousy and entitlement. In spite of his somewhat arrogant nature, Daida is actually a fair-minded and intelligent young man, who has slowly been matured by the tragedies that have befallen him.

Though Hiling loves him, she put enormous pressure on Daida from an early age, insisting he become as strong and capable as possible so he can succeed his father and care for his older brother. This made Daida deeply resentful of Bojji, feeling his brother was a useless presence in the kingdom. Unfortunately these hateful feelings were exacerbated by the Magic Mirror, a strange companion King Bosse had given his young son at an early age.

The Magic Mirror seemed to bring out the worst in Daida, encouraging his more destructive and arrogant behaviors, even as those around him tried to give him good counsel. This was ultimately a plot by Miranjo to gain Daida's confidence, only to betray him at a pivotal moment and resurrect King Bosse in his body.

Plot[]

Early Life[]

Born with everything his brother lacked, Daida was praised and openly spoke of as Bosse's successor from a young age, even though he was the second-born. Naturally, this made Daida extremely arrogant, and he was one of the many in the kingdom who openly disparaged Bojji.

Succeeding Bosse[]

After the death of Bosse, Queen Hiling quickly took action to void Bosse's will, and install Daida as the second king of the Bosse Kingdom. Daida's reign was short-lived and characterized by back-biting cruelty. One of his first acts as king was to order the assassination of Apeas, and another was to order the assassination of Bojji to consolidate his power. It's suggested that Daida's cruelty as king was the result of manipulation from the Magic Mirror, a strange artifact given to him by his father.

Trapped[]

Daida's reign was short-lived. Within days of his coronation he was manipulated into entering the Bosse Kingdom's secret underground chambers, where he was forced to drink a potion that buried his consciousness and allowed King Bosse's soul to take control of his body.

Trapped in a strange black void within his own body, Daida slowly witnessed his father's past, watching Bosse's memories unfold in the void. During this time Daida also came to learn of Miranjo, her tragic origins, and her new identity as the Magic Mirror.

Restoration & Abdication[]

Daida would remain trapped in his own body until Bojji was finally able to confront Bosse. After a perilous battle, Bojji destroyed his father's massive club, finally showing he had exceeded Bosse. After acknowledging Bojji's strength, Bosse conferred with Miranjo, and finally passed on, his soul released from Daida's body. In his last moments Miranjo recalled Bosse's first death, and his wish for Miranjo to look after Daida.

Miranjo would have joined Bosse in the afterlife, but the moment her soul escaped the Magic Mirror it was devoured by the Demon.

Miranjo's fate appeared to be sealed, she seemed like she would be condemned to eternal torment within the Demon's body. Luckily Daida, newly-restored to his own body, was able to intercede and co-opt a wish from the Demon. Daida forced the Demon to restore Miranjo's original body, resurrecting the mage instantly. After witnessing her past and coming to know her as a person, Daida professed his love for Miranjo, and announced to his court that he would marry the former enemy.

Afterward Daida apologized to Bojji for his rude behavior, and formally abdicated, allowing Bojji to become the new king of the Bosse Kingdom.

King Again[]

Daida's abdication was short-lived, as within a days Bojji himself abdicated the role and passed it down to his younger brother. Daida was not shown accepting the position, but appears to have done so, managing the kingdom with new wisdom as his older brother adventures across the world.

Relationships[]

Bojji[]

Daida harbored a deep resentment of Bojji for most of his life, believing his brother's weaknesses defined him as a person, and thinking that made him a useless presence in the kingdom. Some of this resentment seems to come from Hiling's strict teachings, where she insisted Daida become strong specifically so he could protect Bojji. However, the majority of this resentment seemed to be due to Miranjo's manipulations, which brought out the worst aspects of Daida's personality.

After maturing a bit, Daida developed a deep appreciation of his older brother. Bojji likewise loves his younger brother, and didn't think twice before challenging his father to restore Daida to his own body.

Hiling[]

Daida appears to have inherited his bad temper and standoffishness from his mother, Hiling. The two are very similar in both their attitudes and the way they treat others, but where Hiling's arrogance easily gives way to her kind and nurturing nature, Daida initially seemed to have no redeeming qualities. This would change as Daida matured as a person.

Hiling, naturally, deeply loves her son, even if she doesn't always show it appropriately.

Miranjo[]

Miranjo seems to have unintentionally had the deepest effect on Daida. Daida underwent a radical maturation while trapped in his own body, discovering his own senses of empathy and forgiveness as he learned of Miranjo's past. In time he developed such a great admiration for her that he decided he loved her, and offered to marry her after being restored to his own body.

Though their relationship began as selfish manipulation on her part, as Miranjo spent more time with Daida's spirit she came to understand and respect the young prince greatly, sensing his similarities to Bosse.

Bosse[]

Like the rest of his family, and indeed most of his court, Bosse kept Daida at arm's length. The two seem to have had very little contact, though Daida clearly idolized his father, trying to emulate his massive feats of strength whenever possible.

Though Bosse was a stoic, he kept a close eye on everyone near him, and seemed to regard Daida fondly. One of his last wishes as king was that Miranjo guide Daida the way she guided him, as he thought Daida closely resembled himself as a young man.

Bebin[]

Bebin is Daida's first mentor and surrogate father-figure. The two share a relatively close relationship compared to the rest of the court, and Daida respects his teacher deeply. In turn, Bebin has enormous faith in Daida, and unreservedly supported Daida to succeed King Bosse.

Abilities[]

Swordsmanship[]

Daida is an extremely talented swordsman, and was able to defeat the captain of a mercenary company prior to the start of the series.

Half-Giant[]

Daida is a giant/human hybrid, and seems to have inherited at least some of his father's strength and stature. Though he's just an adolescent he already appears to be significantly taller than other children in the Bosse Kingdom, and has exhibited feats of strength equal to or greater than adult humans. Whether Daida has inherited other giant traits remains to be seen.

Restorative Magic[]

Daida has inherited his mother's restorative magic. While reincarnated in Daida's body, Bosse was able to make use of this magic and couple it with his own raw power to revive an entire battlefield of slain warriors.

Trivia[]

  • Daida's name derives from the Japanese word Daidarabotchi (ダイダラボッチ), a type of gigantic yokai from Japanese folklore. This was confirmed by mangaka Sousuke Toka in the volume 13 afterword.
