Demon (魔神[1], Majin) is a character in Ousama Ranking and its anime adaptation.
He is a supernatural entity who is said to appear when great heroes die. The Demon is the source of many major characters' abilities and afflictions, including Bosse, Miranjo, and Bojji.
Appearance[]
The Demon is an entity with a generally humanoid appearance, but inhuman proportions. It is even larger than King Bosse, with exceptionally-long limbs and a muscular, though slim, body. It has flaming red skin, black eyes with yellow irises, pointed ears, pointed horns, a shaggy black beard, and a purple mouth held in a permanent heart-shaped rictus with tusks protruding downward.
Personality[]
The Demon is a largely enigmatic presence, but tends to behave like a traditional devil, tempting mortals with whatever they desire in exchange for heavy costs they typically do not fully understand.
It speaks an unknown language that must be interpreted for others. Miranjo and Despa appear to be able to understand this language.
Plot[]
The Demon is a mysterious being first encountered by Miranjo when they were both small children. Miranjo comforted the small Demon, who had recently learned that any use of its powers would turn it into a more monstrous being. The young Miranjo promised to never ask anything of the Demon.
Its origins are completely unknown.[2] Multiple characters have struck bargains with the Demon in the past, chiefly Miranjo, who felt guilt over breaking her past promise. Additionally, other characters are aware of the Demon's existence, and actively pursue it to further their own interests, namely King Desha and Despa.
In his younger days Bosse, on the advice of Miranjo, sought out the Demon and wished to become the world's strongest man. The demon replied, through Miranjo's translation, that he can materialize wishes, but cannot grant powers that don't already exist. To grant Bosse's wish the Demon suggested stealing the power of Bosse's firstborn child, at the cost of some of Bosse's lifespan. Bosse agreed to this, setting off the chain of events that would lead to Bojji's adventures in the present day. [3]
Years later, immediately after Bosse's death, the Demon appeared squatting over Bosse's chest. He stared at the group, pointed at Bojji, and threw his head back in laughter before disappearing.[4]
After Bojji destroyed Miranjo's mirror, the Demon prevented her soul from escaping and trapped her within its body. Inside, Miranjo witnessed the Demon devouring other souls, then vomiting them back up, smashing them, and allowing them to reform before devouring them again.[5] This was to be Miranjo's fate as well, until a newly-restored Daida managed to co-opt a wish from the Demon, and demand he restore Miranjo to her original body.
The Demon granted Daida's wish without cost, as enigmatic as ever.
Abilities[]
Supernatural Bargains[]
The Demon offers all who seek it a bargain, usually phrased in plain but deceptive terms. It is able to wield enormous magic in this way, including transferring one person's strength to another. The extent of this ability is unknown.
Every wish the Demon grants increases its monstrous appearance, an effect the Demon found very upsetting as a child. This has not prevented the Demon from exercising its power in the past, as it has become a much more frightening being since it first encountered Miranjo.
Quotes[]
