Miranjo (ミランジョ, Miranjo) is a character in Ousama Ranking and its anime adaption. She is a mage originally from the Houma Kingdom, and one of Bosse's oldest companions.
She was the mastermind of two attempted coups of the Bosse Kingdom.
Appearance[]
Miranjo is a small woman with black hair, black eyes, and pale skin. Originally, and by her own admission, Miranjo's appearance was mostly the result of sorcery, due to her being disfigured as a child. In this state preferred to keep her face hidden beneath a dark green hooded cloak cinched with a blue metal pin, and wore dark green robes beneath it.
Miranjo's original body was slain during her first attempted coup of the Bosse Kingdom. To stave off death she made a deal with a demon, transferring her consciousness to a nearby hexagonal mirror, where she remained for roughly a decade.
Her body has since been restored to its original self, with her childhood disfigurement apparently cured.
Personality[]
Miranjo was originally an extremely kind and outgoing little girl, one so open and joyful that she would even attract small, friendly animals while playing in the forest behind her house. This would change after the tragic fall of the Houma Kingdom, as well as the sadistic abuse she suffered at the hands of the Gyakuza Kingdom.
Deeply traumatized by her early life, Miranjo would remain near-catatonic and suicidal for months, only to slowly move past her trauma with the help of her surrogate father Bosse. Though she would remain somewhat melancholy, Miranjo regained much of her former self, though she became extremely attached to Bosse in the process.
Miranjo's love and attachment to her surrogate father was the major motivation for most of her actions as a young adult. Much of what she did, including introducing Bosse to the Demon and exhorting him to have children with Sheena and Hiling were part of her carefully-orchestrated plot to prolong their lives together. To this end, Miranjo came to see the other members of Bosse's family as chess pieces, and callously attacked, manipulated, and betrayed them in order to achieve her goals. She would remain this way until finally forced to reckon with what she had done.
Though much of her early life is characterized by her devotion to Bosse, Miranjo retained positive aspects of her personality as well. She was a kind and nurturing friend to Apeas, and appears to have helped with the early development of the Bosse Kingdom.
Plot[]
Meeting Bosse[]
Miranjo was born in the Houma Kingdom, a nation of powerful mages whose sorcery could rival the power of the Gods. The child of two mages herself, Miranjo seemed to take after her mother, who was an exceptionally kind woman. At the time of her birth the Houma Kingdom had been in a protracted war with the Gods, and were the only humans able to resist them.
Her life would take a dramatic turn when a giant adventurer, Bosse, arrived in the Houma Kingdom and challenged her father to a duel. Bosse narrowly won, slaying Miranjo's father, but sustaining heavy injuries himself. Miranjo's mother nursed Bosse back to health herself, and after witnessing the kindness of the Houma Kingdom Bosse became their ally in their resistance against the Gods' tyranny.
Tragedies in the Gyakuza Kingdom[]
A short time later the Houma Kingdom attempted to rejuvenate the nearby Gyakuza Kingdom to gain a new ally in their war against the Gods. Mages of the Houma Kingdom personally relocated to Gyakuza, and helped in the redevelopment of their kingdom, quickly turning it into a prosperous and idyllic land. Unfortunately the people of Gyakuza proved untrustworthy allies, and conspired with the Gods to crush the mages of the Houma Kingdom in a final decisive battle.
While the battlefront raged, Miranjo's mother was killed by the traitorous Gyakuza people in her own home, and Miranjo was brutally tortured and disfigured. Unaware of this, Bosse arrived to visit the Houma mages in Gyakuza, and upon finding Miranjo brutalized and chained a post, savagely killed every Gyakuza villager in retribution. Bosse then collected their bodies and pressed another surviving Houma mage to use them to restore Miranjo's body.
Traveling with Bosse[]
This began a new chapter in Miranjo's life, adventuring alongside Bosse. While initially despondent and suicidal over what she had lost, Miranjo came to love Bosse and think of him as a surrogate father. When Bosse began finding the limits of his personal power, Miranjo stepped in, finding him new challenges and eventually a way to increase his titanic strength even further, via a pact with a demon. This would set off the series of events leading to the founding of the Bosse Kingdom and Bojji's present-day adventures.
In spite of their improved circumstances and wild success, Miranjo longed for the simple days of traveling and adventuring with Bosse. To this end she spent much of her young adulthood developing intricate plans to prolong their lives together. Bosse, feeling both obligated to and responsible for Miranjo, indulged in her later plots.
First Coup of the Bosse Kingdom[]
This would quickly lead to tragedy, as Bosse underestimated Miranjo's resolve to return to their adventuring lives. Miranjo partnered with a rival kingdom to attempt to overthrow Bosse, stripping him of the kingly duties she believed were preventing him from being an adventurer. The attempted coup failed, but Queen Sheena was killed while defending the castle, and Miranjo herself was betrayed by her foreign allies, who killed her original body during the war.

Miranjo trapped in the Magic Mirror
Too tenacious to give up, Miranjo struck a new bargain with the Demon, transferring her soul to a nearby mirror and adopting the new guise of the Magic Mirror for many years to come. Miranjo, with Bosse's reluctant cooperation, formed elaborate plans for the Bosse Kingdom.
Resurrection of Bosse[]
Bosse soon succumbed to a mysterious illness as a part of his pact with the Demon. In his last moments Bosse asked Miranjo to look after his second son, Daida, as he felt Daida most resembled himself and would benefit from Miranjo's presence, just as Bosse had done. However, and seemingly unknown to Bosse, Miranjo had spent years preparing for this eventuality.
It appears Bosse's entire second marriage had been carefully orchestrated by Miranjo for a single purpose: to provide new vessels to prolong Bosse and Miranjo's lives. After extensively manipulating Daida as the Magic Mirror, Miranjo was able to lead him to the Bosse Kingdom's mysterious underground laboratory, There, Miranjo forced Daida to consume a potion that allowed Bosse's soul to forcibly inhabit Daida's body, effectively resurrecting him into his second son's body.
Second Coup of the Bosse Kingdom[]
As the next phase of her long-running plans, Miranjo released six dangerous criminals from the Underworld and allowed them to storm the Bosse Kingdom's castle. These criminals, Zokku, Gigan, Black, Red, Kingbo, and Ouken were allowed to imprison the reincarnated Bosse and effectively seize control of the kingdom. The coup came frighteningly-close to succeeding due to Ouken's invincibility on the battlefield, but ultimately Bosse refused to stand by any longer, and crushed the coup single-handedly, culminating in his final death and the shattering of the Magic Mirror.
Restoration[]
Miranjo's fate seemed sealed. Her debt to the Demon came due, and she seemed to be fated to eternal torment within the Demon's body (ironically mirroring what she had attempted to do to Daida). Luckily, a newly-restored Daida interfered, co-opting a wish from the Demon to restore Miranjo's original body.
Miranjo was instantly resurrected into her own preserved body, with her fatal injury and seemingly all of her original disfigurement reversed. Having finally reckoned with the death of her surrogate father, and the misery she had inflicted on others, a repentant Miranjo was at a loss for what to do.
A solution came almost immediately. While trapped in his own body Daida had shared time with a small specter that seemed to be a younger-version of Miranjo, an experience that had deeply affected him. He professed his newfound love for Miranjo on the spot, and announced to his assembled court that the two would marry. At length, Miranjo accepted, and vowed to spend the rest of her life passing on her hard-won wisdom and spreading happiness to make up for what she had done.
Relationships[]
Bosse[]
Miranjo felt closest to King Bosse, and had a complicated relationship with the giant, seeming to consider him halfway between a surrogate father and a lover. Their shared history deeply affected both of them, with Miranjo feeling indebted to Bosse for saving her life and showing her the beauties of the world.
Ironically, Bosse also felt deeply indebted to Miranjo, and spent much of his reign as king either assisting or allowing her various plots, as he thought they would make her truly happy. Bosse considered Miranjo something of a surrogate daughter, and was deeply concerned with her happiness in wake of her tragic life.
Before his first death Bosse asked Miranjo to look after Daida, as he felt Daida most closely resembled himself, and would need Miranjo's guidance as well.
Daida[]
Daida first met Miranjo in her guise as the Magic Mirror, which he received as a gift from his father Bosse. A young child at the time, Daida would go on to basically grow up with the disguised Miranjo, and came to rely on her counsel. Unfortunately Miranjo abused this trust, using it to manipulate Daida toward her own ends.
Daida's first encounter with the actual Miranjo happened while he was trapped in his own body, though the circumstances of their meeting is unclear. While trapped, Daida developed a friendship with a specter that seemed to be Miranjo's younger self, and slowly learned of her tragic history while witnessing his father's memories. Miranjo's deep grief was relieved by Daida's presence, though she didn't seem to realize this herself.
The entire experience had a sobering, maturing effect on the arrogant Daida, and he developed a deep bond with the Miranjo specter, feeling betrayed at first when he discovered that she was the same Magic Mirror who had stolen his body. Upon reclaiming his body, Daida shocked his family by professing a deep love and respect for Miranjo, and announced his intentions to marry her in front of his entire court.
Demon[]
Miranjo has a complicated relationship with the Demon, considering it a childhood friend but regretting her use of its abilities. She seems to feel she betrayed the Demon by not being able to maintain her original promise: to never ask it to use its powers.
The Demon is enigmatic, but the fact that it appears to have restored Miranjo to life without cost suggests it has some lingering affection for her.
Queen Sheena[]
Miranjo betrayed the trust of Queen Sheena in her first attempted coup of the Bosse Kingdom, and ignored her pleas to spare Bojji's life as the queen defended her son. Later, when Miranjo prevented Kage from crossing into the afterlife, she encountered the specter of Sheena glaring at her from the other side of the divide.
Sheena made her anger known, but also forgave Miranjo for her plotting, seeming to know and understand her tragic past. Sheena dismissed Miranjo's plot as futile, as she believed her son was too strong to be beaten.
Miranjo's Mother[]
Miranjo had a loving, affectionate relationship with her mother as a little girl, and grieved for her deeply after her murder. Later, when Miranjo prevented Kage from crossing into the afterlife, she encountered the specter of her mother looking deeply saddened from the other side of the divide.
Her mother pleaded with her to give up her plots and re-evaluate what actually made her happy, an encounter that rattled Miranjo deeply.
Abilities[]
Advanced Sorcery[]
Miranjo is a sorceress, and her magic appears to be extremely powerful. King Desha of the Underworld, upon sensing her magic, remarked that it "stank of death" and was a type of magic believed to be lost. This is likely a reference to Miranjo's origins in the Houma Kingdom, a dead country renowned for its powerful mages.
The true extent of Miranjo's sorcery is unknown, but she is generally believed to be exceptionally-powerful, particularly given her age.
Potion Brewing[]
Miranjo's magical ability extends to potion-brewing, and she is able to brew exceedingly complex potions that may even resurrect the dead, as she did with King Bosse.
Mind Control[]
Miranjo is capable of putting living beings under her thrall, though this power is apparently less effective on smarter and more willful beings. Conversely, this power is incredibly effective on wild animals and people who have lost their grip on reality. This proved true with the mad immortal Ouken, who Miranjo very easily controlled for extended periods.
Those affected by Miranjo's mind control develop glowing red eyes.
Underworld Portal[]
Miranjo created a portal to the Underworld using the corpse of a member of the Shadow Clan. This portal opened onto a fixed spot in the Underworld's countryside, and was used frequently until its discovery by King Desha. It has since been destroyed by Domas and Hokuro on orders of King Bosse.
